Biden To Hold Call With President Macron "Later This Afternoon"

US

NSC Coordinator for Strategic Communications John Kirby has told reporters that President Biden will hold a call with French President Emmanuel Macron later today.

  • Kirby says that following today's call with EU Commission President Ursula von der Leyen, "Biden will also have a conversation later this afternoon with French President Emmanuel Macron," and confirms the White House will have a readout of the call after its completion.
  • Biden's relationship with Macron has experienced considerable strain since Macron attended the White House for a state visit in December '22 and the White House will be keen to coordinate a joint position of China ahead of the G7 leaders' summit in Japan May 19-21.
  • A key point of disagreement is likely to remain to what extend western states should continue to engage with Beijing politically and economically with Macron continuing to express a significantly more dovish stance on China than fellow G7 leaders.
