Biden-Zelensky Hold Call And More EU Sanctions Expected

UKRAINE

President Biden has held a 30 minute phone call with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky.

  • Zelensky tweeted: 'Just had a conversation with @POTUS. The American leadership on anti-Russian sanctions and defense assistance to Ukraine was discussed. We must stop the aggressor as soon as possible. Thank you for your support!'
  • Comes as the EU Committee of Permanent Representatives is reportedly meeting to discuss the Russian sanctions rollout but is being delayed by a Polish push for greater and more wide-ranging sanctions.
  • Laurence Norman of the Wall Street Journal has reported that Poland is pushing for all Russian banks to be cut out of SWIFT and then for sanctions to be extended to Russian oil and gas.
  • Norman writes: 'Polish source notes that @MorawieckiM said this evening that Polish governments wants all Russian banks delisted from Swift.'
  • Reuters earlier reported that: 'SWIFT said on Tuesday it was waiting to see which banks authorities want disconnected from its global financial messaging system as sanctions in response to Russia's invasion of Ukraine are rolled out.'
