Blinken: China Is Watching How The World Responds To Ukraine

US

US Secretary of State Antony Blinken has told the Senate Appropriations Committee that China is watching carefully to see how the world reacts to Ukraine.

  • Blinken declines to says whether US authorities would arrest Russian President Vladimir Putin if he came to the US: "I can't get ahead of that... we're not a party to the ICC so I don't want to engage in a hypothetical."
  • On if the meeting between President Xi and President Putin was a 'marriage of convenience' or a 'strategic alliance?' Blinken: "Perhaps a combination of both..."
  • Blinken says he believes the price cap on Russian oil has been effective at limiting Russian revenue and will continue to be effective even if China fulfils pledged made this week to increase purchases.
  • On the prospect of China providing lethal aid to Russia: "As we speak today, we have not seem them cross that line."
  • On why the US should continue to support Ukraine: "If we allow Russian aggression to continue with impunity we open a Pandora's Box around the world... The stakes in Ukraine has a profound impact in Asia... Everyone is watching how we and the world responds... China is looking at this very carefully, they will draw lessons from how the world comes together, or doesn't."
