BRAZIL: EU-Mercosur Deal To Be Completed By Years End

EU Commission President Ursula von der Leyen, speaking at a press conference with Brazilian President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva in Brasilia, has stated that an EU-Mercosur deal will be completed by the end of the year, "at the latest."

  • Lula, critised an addendum to the deal, added by the EU, for adding obligations which could lead to sanctions.
  • VDL says to Lula: "You brought Brazil back to where it belongs. As a major global player a leader in the Democratic world and I'm here to tell you... Europe is back in Brazil and Latin America."
  • VDL: "It is time to take our strategic partnership to the next level... The EU is already the top investor in the region and I'm glad to announce we will step up even further."
  • VDL: "The EU will invest 10 billion Euros in Latin America, [to be] complimented by private investments and contributions of our member states."
  • VDL also says the EU and Brazil will partner in a new 2 billion euro project to develop green hydrogen in Brazil and launch a strategic partnership in critical raw materials "to meet rising demand."
