CANADA: CETA Is A "Win-Win" Deal, PM Attal

EU
  • French Prime Minister Gabriel Attal describe the CETA free-trade agreement between the European Union and Canada as a "win-win deal" for both sides at a press conference with Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau in Ottawa today.
  • Reuters notes: "The deal suffered a setback last month when a large majority of French senators voted against the ratification of the free trade in a closely watched ballot after farmers slammed liberal trade policies in weeks of protests."
  • Le Figero reports that Attal, who is supportive of CETA, "brings in his delegation representatives of sectors, “directly beneficiaries of Ceta and mobilized to defend it."
  • The European Commission notes that CETA features, "some of the strongest commitments ever included in an EU trade agreement, including on promoting labour rights, on protecting the environment, and on sustainable development. CETA integrates EU and Canadian commitments to apply international rules on workers' rights, environmental protection and climate action. These obligations are binding."
