China In Focus At G7 And NATO Summits

G7 Leaders have released a joint communique outlining the goals and ambitions discussed by the group at the summit. Much like the upcoming NATO summit, one of the key themes of the communique is the more central role of China in G7 future planning.

  • Barkin writes: "China appears 14 times in the G7 leaders communique, up from 4 times in the G7 communique from 2021. The human rights language is also stronger, including this line: "We are gravely concerned about the human rights situation in China.""
  • G7: "With regard to China’s role in the global economy, we are continuing to consult on collective approaches, also beyond the G7, to challenges posed by non-market policies and practices which distort the global economy. We will build a shared understanding of China's non-transparent and market- distorting interventions and other forms of economic and industrial directives. We will then work together to develop coordinated action to ensure a level playing field for our businesses and workers..."
