China In Talks With SCO Members To Expand O&G Infrastructure

Chinese President Xi Jinping has engaged in talks with Shanghai Cooperation Organisation members at the SCO summit in Samarkand, Uzbekistan, aimed at expanding the network of oil and gas infrastructure to China.

  • The President of Mongolia Ukhnaagiin Khürelsükh, an observer member of the SCO, told Xi and Russian President Vladimir Putin in a trilateral meeting that Mongolia is willing to support the construction of oil and gas transit pipelines through Mongolia connecting China and Russia.
  • Earlier today, Xi met with Turkmenistan President Serdar Berdymukhamedov and, according to a Chinese govt readout, Xi "emphasized the need for the two sides to increase the size and scale of natural gas cooperation..."
  • The WSJ reported yesterday that a key outcome of the summit for Russia is the finalisation of a gas pipeline to China in return for Chinese supplies of advanced semiconductors.
