China To Hold Military Exercises In SCS As Pelosi Expected In Taiwan

US-CHINA

China's state-run CGTN reporting that the Chinese military will hold naval exercises in the South China Sea from 2-6 August. The exercises, as well as an incursion by four PLA aircraft into the Taiwanese Air Defence Identification Zone (ADIZ) earlier today, come as it appears increasingly inevitable that Speaker of the US House of Representatives Nancy Pelosi will visit Taipei tomorrow (2 August).

  • Steve Herman at VOA News: "Taiwan media reporting Speaker Pelosi is expected to arrive at Taipei Songshan Airport at 22:30 [local time, 1030ET/1530BST] on Tuesday and after taking a COVID19 test there, she'll overnight at the Grand Hyatt and meet with President Tsai Ing-wen at 08:00 local time [2000ET Tuesday, 0100BST] on Wednesday."
  • The prospective visit remains a major potential flashpoint, with Beijing viewing Pelosi's attendance in Taipei potentially being viewed as an implicit recognition of Taiwan's independence, rather than pursuing the US's official stance of a 'One China' policy.
