CNA: US Lawmakers To Arrive In Taiwan Today

TAIWAN

Taiwan's Central News Agency has reported that a group of US lawmakers will arrive in Taiwan this evening, the third US Congressional delegation to the self governing island since House Speaker Nancy Pelosi's (D-CA) visit earlier this month drove Sino-US relations to multi-year lows.

  • CNA has not named the lawmakers but reported that the group will arrive in Taipei at approximately 23:00 local time (11:00 ET 16:00 BST) and is scheduled to meet Taiwan President Tsai Ing-wen.
  • Taiwan's Foreign Minister has not confirmed the visit but said in a statement that "important guests" will arrive in Taipei at the above time.
  • China continues to conduct military drills around Taiwan - viewed by many as a data gathering exercise ahead of a potential invasion of the island. Today, Taiwan claimed five Chinese fighter planes crossed the median line in the Taiwan Strait. The median line is considered an unofficial delineation of Taiwan territory but is not recongnised by China.
