Conservative Yoon Leads In Poll Ahead Of Presidential Election

SOUTH KOREA

Latest polling from Realmeter shows conservative People Power Party candidate Yoon Seok-youl leading liberal Democratic Party of Korea nominee Lee Jae-myung by over 5% as the South Korean presidential election approaches on 9 March.

  • Realmeter poll: Preferred presidential candidate: Yoon Seok-youl (PPP): 43.4% (+3.2), Lee Jae-myung (DPK, Liberal): 38.1% (-0.4), Ahn Cheol-soo: 7.5% (-2.5). +/- vs. 23-28 January 2022. Fieldwork: 2-4 February 2022. Sample size: 1,509
  • The boost in support for Yoon may be attributable to the increased military activity of North Korea in recent weeks, with a series of rocket launches taking place on the orders of the Kim regime. Increased tensions between the North and South often benefit conservative candidates ahead of elections, given the centre-right's more hawkish stance on military and diplomatic policy towards the North.
