Czech Rep/Poland Restart Discussions On Stork II Gas Pipeline

ENERGY SECURITY

Czech Prime Minister Petr Fiala and Polish Prime Minister Mateusz Morawiecki have met in Warsaw today and discussed the possibility of resuming construction of the scrapped Stork II gas pipeline.

  • Fiala: 'Poland can extend a helping hand when it comes to gas supplies. We agreed to open a debate on Stork II gas pipeline. Poland and Czech Republic will also establish a working group preparing for the possible oil cut from Russia.'
  • Fiala: '...We have made an offer to purchase part of the gas from new LNG terminals. The Czech Republic is 90% dependent on Russian gas.'
  • Morawiecki also used the joint presser with Fiala to apply pressure on Budapest: 'We expect from Hungarian govt an unequivocal and condemning stance on the war crimes in Ukraine.'
  • Fatih Birol Executive Director of the IEA: 'Important discussion with Polish Minister Anna Moskwa by phone this morning on the latest situation with Poland's energy supplies after Russia unilaterally cut off natural gas deliveries.
