Defence Secretary Lloyd Austin Speaks At NATO

NATO
Summary of Austin's comments:
  • Russia continues building up its forces in Crimea, Black Sea and Belarus. This brings Russia right up to NATO’s border.
  • NATO commitment to Article 5 remains ironclad.
  • NATO will defend every inch of NATO territory.
  • Ukraine has never threatened anyone. That is what Russia would have us believe and justifies Russian mobilisation.
  • We have not seen any sign of Russian demobilisation. We have seen an increase. We have seen more combat and support aircraft and building naval presence in the Black Sea.
  • I was a soldier and you don’t do these things for no reason or if you’re planning to pack up and go home.
  • We will watch for a Russia false flag operation. This has been used by Russia in the past.
  • We will closely match Russia words to Russian deeds.
  • Mr Putin has said he wants to engage in more dialogue. We welcome that and believe there is time and space to find a peaceful outcome that respects Ukraine’s sovereignty and territorial integrity.
  • It will be clear to the whole world that Putin started a war with a diplomatic solution available.
  • I have never seen NATO more relevant than today. Putin doesn't want NATO on his Western flank but he is getting exactly that.
  • There is nothing inevitable about this looming conflict. It can still be averted.
