Democrat Suozzi Takes Back NY-03 In Blow To Republicans

US

The Democrats have won an important special election for the House of Representatives, ensuring that the Republican majority in the chamber remains razor-thin and demonstrating the party's recent ability to win special elections in spite of tough polling for President Joe Biden. In the special election for New York's third congressional district Democrat Tom Suozzi - who held the seat from 2017-23 - defeated Republican Mazi Pilip by 53.9% to 46.1% with 93% of votes reported.

  • WaPo highlights Democrats' ability to "turn out their base and tap into anger at GOP-backed abortion restrictions since the Supreme Court overturned Roe v. Wade."
  • Immigration also played a major role in the race, validating "Suozzi’s decision to invest heavily in countering the GOP on immigration, suggesting that Democrats in tight races can benefit from talking tougher on the border and highlighting Republicans’ abrupt abandonment of a bipartisan deal on the matter negotiated in Congress."
  • There are two strands of thinking on the NY-03 race.
    • One is that given the intense focus on congressional races in New York state following a number of unexpected results in the 2022 midterms, this special election could act as a notable bellwether ahead of the general election later int he year.
    • The other is that special elecitons tend to bring out the more politically-engaged voter, resulting in a skewed outcome. Moreover, the election took place in poor weather and given that Democrats are more likely to vote early and Republicans are more likely to vote on polling day this could have further depressed GOP turnout.
