DeSantis To Embark On Global Tour In Effort To Jump-Start Flagging Campaign

US

Florida Governor Ron DeSantis (R) is set to embark on a whistle-stop tour of key US global allies as he seeks to burnish his foreign policy credentials and jump-start his flagging (as yet still unannounced) campaign for the 2024 Republican presidential nomination. The tour was announced last nightwith DeSantis heading a 'Florida trade delegation'. However. the meeting with senior politicians and officials in Japan, South Korea, Israel, and the UK bears all the hallmarks of a prospective candidate attempting to boost his reputation on international affairs.

  • DeSantis will meet with Japanese PM Fumio Kishida and Foreign Minister Yoshimasa Hayashi 24-25 April before travelling to South Korea for talks with PM Han Duck-soo.
  • On 27 April DeSantis will deliver an address at an event in Israel commemorating the 75th anniversary of the state's creation. Finally, he will travel to the UK where he will hold talks with Foreign Secretary James Cleverly.
  • DeSantis' prospects of gaining the GOP presidential nomination for 2024 look to have declined substantially since his high-point following the 2022 mid-terms. Betting market data from Smarkets gives the Florida governor a 23.8% implied probability of winning the nomination compared to 61.4% for former President Donald Trump. This is the lowest number for DeSantis since June 2022.
  • In the aftermath of a poorly-received visit to Washington, D.C. earlier this week, a number of Florida Republicans endorsed Trump, dealing a further blow to DeSantis' prospects.
