Draghi To Meet w/President Following M5S Vote Boycott-RTRS

ITALY

Reuters reporting that Prime Minister Mario Draghi is en route to the Quirinale Palace to meet with President Sergio Mattarella following the boycott of a confidence vote in the Senate by the populist 5-Star Movement (M5S).

  • M5S also in a state of disarray following split that saw a significant minority of the party leave to join Foreign Minister Luigi Di Maio's new centrist grouping.
  • Mattarella could seek to encourage Draghi to remain in office for sake of political stability. However, cannot be guaranteed. Unclear who a successor could be that would command support of the ideologically broad coalition that Draghi managed to unite for a period.
