Draghi To Meet w/President Following M5S Vote Boycott-RTRS

Reuters reporting that Prime Minister Mario Draghi is en route to the Quirinale Palace to meet with President Sergio Mattarella following the boycott of a confidence vote in the Senate by the populist 5-Star Movement (M5S).

  • Prior to the vote, Draghi had stated that a M5S boycott would be the precursor to his resignation as PM. The party sits as part of the broad coalition gov't, but has been at loggerheads with Draghi in recent weeks over an aid decree regarding support in the wake of the energy price crisis.
  • M5S also in a state of disarray following split that saw a significant minority of the party leave to join Foreign Minister Luigi Di Maio's new centrist grouping.
  • Mattarella could seek to encourage Draghi to remain in office for sake of political stability. However, cannot be guaranteed. Unclear who a successor could be that would command support of the ideologically broad coalition that Draghi managed to unite for a period.
