Duda Talks Up US Ahead Of Biden's Ukraine War Anniversary Speech

NATO

Polish President Andrzej Duda has spoken effusively of US President Joe Biden, and the US, following a bilateral meeting ahead of Biden's speech to mark the anniversary of Russia's invasion of Ukraine.

  • Duda said that Biden's trip to Kyiv yesterday was an "incredible gesture" which showed that the "free world has not forgotten Ukraine."
  • Duda further stated that the "US has restored democratic rules, brought back freedom," and the US military presence makes Poland "safe and secure."
  • Secretary of State Antony Blinken said Biden is, “likely to talk about the road that we’ve travelled together over the last year [and] our enduring commitment to Ukraine’s success...”
  • Biden will also have to respond to bellicose rhetoric from Russian President Vladimir Putin this morning which included a concerning announcement suspending participation in the New START nuclear treaty.
  • Observers will be watching closely to see if Biden can convince allies that the security assistance tap won't be turned off by Republicans in Congress and for an unambiguous declaration that the US will uphold the defensive integrity of NATO's Eastern Flank.
  • Biden's speech is scheduled for 11:30 ET 16:30 GMT:https://www.whitehouse.gov/live/
