DUP Head-We Will Unanimously Oppose 'Stormont Brake' In 22 March Vote

EU-UK

Head of Northern Ireland's hard-line unionist Democratic Unionist Party (DUP) Sir Jeffrey Donaldson has stated that his MPs in the UK House of Commons have 'unanimously agreed' to oppose the draft 'Stormont brake' statutory instrument in a vote due to take place 22 March. The DUP's vote will not be enough to defeat the gov't, but bodes poorly for the perceived success or lack thereof of the 'Windsor Framework' agreed between the UK and EU earlier in the month, which is intended to resolve issues in the Northern Ireland protocol of the Brexit Withdrawal Agreement.

  • Donaldson: "Whilst representing real progress the “brake” does not deal with the fundamental issue which is the imposition of EU law by the Protocol." Full statement:https://mydup.com/news/dup-statement-ahead-of-vote...
  • The hope from the UK gov't is that the framework would see the power-sharing executive restored at the Northern Ireland Assembly in time for the 25th anniversary of the Good Friday/Belfast Agreement in early April. This kind of rhetoric from the DUP would seem to quash those hopes.
