Ecuador Impeachment & Anti-Corruption Bill

Ecuador: A couple of stories garnering some attention so for those interested:

  • Today, Ecuador's Congress is set to vote on impeachment of the country's Interior Minister Maria Paula Romo.
  • She is accused of failing to perform her duties during the October demonstrations, last year.
  • Separately, Finance Minister Pozo, is hopeful the National Assembly will pass an anti-corruption bill which will secure disbursal of $2b by the IMF while the law itself will still be subject to a potential presidential veto.
  • Once the legislature restarts work in January, govt will submit a bill that above all aims to restore central bank autonomy
  • Pozo called campaign promises to introduce a $400/month universal basic income via unbacked money "a demagogic adventure" that would threaten Ecuador's use of the U.S. dollar as its currency.
