Election Confirmed For 24 April, PM Jansa Faces Ouster As Greens Rise

SLOVENIA

Following the confirmation last week of 24 April as the date for Slovenia's parliamentary election, the latest opinion polling shows the Green liberal Freedom Movement (GS) leading ahead of PM Janesz Jansa's populist Slovenian Democratic Party (SDS).

  • Ninamedia poll: GS: 27% (+4), SDS: 24% (-2), Social Democrats: 9% (-5), The Left: 9%, Marjan Sarec List: 8% (+2), New Slovenia: 6%, Let's Connect Slovenia: 4%, Party of Alenka Bratusek: 4% (-1), Our Land: 2% (-1), Liberal Democrats: 2% (-1). +/- vs. 25-27 Jan 2022. Fieldwork: 7-10 Feb 2022. Sample size: 1,050
  • The 27% support achieved by GS is the highest the party has ever recieved in a Ninamedia poll. The sharp rise in support for GS, led by businessman and former Positive Slovenia and Party of Alenka Bratusek official Robert Golob, has raised the prospect of the ouster of controversial PM Janesz Jansa.
  • Jansa's controverisal statements on media freedoms, and the closeness of his relations with Hungarian PM Viktor Orban and the right-wing Law and Justice Party in Poland saw a difficult relationship between Ljubljana and Brussels in H221, when Slovenia held the rotating presidency of the Council of the European Union.
  • Golob has held meetings with the leaders of parties in the anti-Jansa 'Coalition of the Constitutional Arc' (Social Democrats, the Left, Party of Alenka Bratusek, Marjan Sarec List), and could seek their support if the GS emerges as the largest party following the election.
