ENERGY: Hurricane Helene Shut in 29% of Oil & 17% of Gas Output in US Gulf

ENERGY

About 511kb/d, or 29%, of oil output and 313mcf/d, or 17% of natural gas output from the US Gulf of Mexico was shut in as Hurricane Helene passes through the eastern Gulf, according to the Bureau of Safety and Environmental Enforcement yesterday.

  • The hurricane will largely pass to the east of most offshore production areas, but operators have so far evacuated workers from 17 offshore platforms as a precaution, according to Argus.
  • Helene is forecast to intensify as it heads for landfall in Florida late on Thursday, NHC said. “A northward or north-northeastward motion at a faster forward speed is expected during the next 36 hours.”
  • Shell said late on Tuesday it has started to restore production at the Appomattox platform to normal levels and was restoring output at Stones due to a change in the storm forecast track.
  • Chevron previously said it was shutting in production at company-operated facilities and Equinor shut down the Titan platform.
  • BP has secured offshore facilities and removed some non-essential staff from Argos, Atlantis, Mad Dog, Na Kika and Thunder Horse platforms.
