EU-Meloni To Meet w/EU Leaders In Brussels In Olive Branch Trip

New Italian PM Giorgi Meloni is in Brussels today to meet with the heads of the European Commission, Council, and Parliament in an effort to present a more moderate face of the new gov't in Rome, in contrast to the more firebrand eurosceptic comments from her and her party's past.

  • Meloni to meet with Commission President Ursula von der Leyen at 1730CET (1230ET, 1630GMT). Doorstep comments from Meloni at 1900CET (1400ET, 1800GMT), and then initial meeting with Council President Charles Michel at 1915CET (1415ET, 1815GMT).   • The visit is Meloni's first foreign trip as PM, and is likely intended to act as something of an olive branch to EU leaders. During the election campaign, and indeed on taking office, Meloni has stated that ‘the good times are over’ for the EU. However, she has also talked up her gov'ts intentions to follow EU rules and consistently re-stated Rome's support for arming Ukraine in its conflict with Russia.
