NATGAS: EU To Look At More 'Flexible' Gas Storage Targets Post-2025

NATGAS

EU to look at more ‘flexible’ filling of gas storage post-2025, Bloomberg reports.

  • The European Union will work with members to allow for more flexible refilling of gas storage in coming years as part of the planned extension of the storage targets at the end of this year, Bloomberg reports citing a draft of the EU’s upcoming Clean Industrial Deal.
  • The draft is subject to change before its publication due at the end of the month.
  • The bloc is also set to examine the need for stricter oversight of the region’s gas markets and will launch a consultation to determine whether funds and traders active in the EU’s gas market should be brought under increased regulatory oversight, Bloomberg reports.
  • European nations have been pushing the EU to relax gas storage targets. Germany requested to be exempt from its target for 2025, while at least six countries were in support of relaxing this year’s targets, Bloomberg had previously reported. The European Commission had made it clear that it would like to leave the 2025 storage targets unchanged.
  • EU rules requiring storage to be 90% full by Nov. 1 expire at the end of 2025.
