Fin Min-'More Important To Fight Inflation Than Recession'

GERMANY

Comments from German Finance Minister Christian Lindner hitting wires.

  • Lindner: It is more important to fight inflation than a recession.
  • Lindner states that the review of the proposed gas levy has been completed, and that he does not see a further review taking place. This comes in contradiction to comments from Economy Minister and Vice-Chancellor Robert Habeck, who stated earlier this morning that the gov't is to review the gas levy at the end of the year.
  • Lindner says that last week it was established that the gov't does not have any legal concerns around the levy and that it can be introduced.
  • Says that the possible nationalisation of utility giant Uniper was factored into the gov'ts assessment, and that any funding for the nationalisation would come from the federal budget and not the gas levy.
Lindner's contradiction of Habeck could either show a lack of communication or even disagreement within the upper echelons of the German gov't. The two come from different coalition parties: Habeck from the centre-left environmentalist Greens, Lindner from the centrist pro-business liberal Free Democrats. Alternatively, the contradiction could signal some confusion between the Finance and Economy ministries on the details of the levy.
