Final Election Results In, Confirm Majority For PM Costa's Socialists

PORTUGAL

The final results from Portugal's legislative elections have finally come through, confirming that Prime Minister Antonio Costa's centre-left Socialist Party (PS) has won an outright majority in the Assembly of the Republic.

  • The PS now holds 119 seats in the 230-member chamber, ahead of the 116 required for an outright majority. The PS gained 11 seats in the snap election, called after the PS' two former leftist allies refused to vote for the gov'ts budget in late-2021.
  • Aside from the PS, the other parties to gain seats were both on the right. The right-wing nationalist Chega (Enough!) gained 11 seats to hold 12 in total and now sit as the third-largest party in parliament. The centre-right libertarian Liberal Initiative gained seven seats for a total of eight.
  • The securing of a majority for Costa's PS could lead to a shift towards the political centre-ground in terms of policy making, given that his gov't no longer relies on the support of the far-left Unitary Democratic Coalition or Left Bloc in order to pass legislation.
