First House Impeachment Inquiry In President Biden Underway Shortly

US

10:00 ET 15:00 BST: House Republicans are shortly due to hold their first inquiry into whether to impeach President Biden on allegations that he profited from his son, Hunter Biden's, foreign business dealings. Hearing livestream: Here

  • Oversight Committee Chair James Comer (R-KY) will say in his opening statement: “President Biden has lied to the American people about his knowledge of and participation in his family’s corrupt business schemes.”
  • Democrats will argue that there is no evidence of criminality on the President’s behalf despite a multi-month probe, led by Comer, into Biden and his family. They will further argue that the inquiry is political manoeuvring to provide a public allegation of corruption against Biden which can offset the damage of former President Donald Trump’s legal problems.
  • Committee ranking Democrat, Jamie Raskin, (D-MD) said in a statement: “It’s hard to grasp the complete derangement of this moment. Why impeach a president who has committed no high crimes and misdemeanours, no low crimes and misdemeanours, and no crimes at all?”
