For Min-Tehran Committed To Resolving Nuclear Dispute Through Diplomacy

IRAN

Wires reporting comments from Iranian Foreign Minister Hossein Amirabdollahian claiming that Tehran is "committed to resolving [the] nuclear dispute through diplomacy." The comment comes in the aftermath of an agreement between Tehran and Washington, D.C., regarding a prisoner swap and Iran eventually gaining access to USD6bn in frozen oil revenue.

  • The deal marks the first concrete diplomatic actions between the countries in two years. Iranian foreign ministry spox Nasser Kanaani stated earlier today that "Releasing of Iran's blocked assets and the prisoners' swap was a separate process from the talks to revive the JCPOA, but these processes can have an impact on each other,"
  • The comments also come as Amirabdollahian is set to embark on a visit to the Saudi capital Riyadh on 17 August. This will be the Iranian foreign minister's first visit to their erstwhile regional competitor since the re-establishment of diplomatic links earlier in 2023 as part of a Beijing-brokered deal.
  • Earlier, Kanaani stated that "no timetable has been determined for a probable visit by President [Ebrahim] Raisi to Saudi Arabia." He added that bilateral relations are improving "step by step."
