Former PM Major Launches Attack On PM Johnson, But Little Impact Likely

UK

Prime Minister Boris Johnson has been on the recieving end of a highly critical speech from former Prime Minister Sir John Major, decrying the Johnson gov'ts alleged telling of untruths and erosion of UK democratic principles.

  • Major, prime minister from 1990 to 1997, hails from the same centre-right Conservative Party as PM Johnson. Such a scathing speech about an incumbent PM from a previous leader of the same party is unprecedented in recent times.
  • However, beyond Wesminster the impact is likely to be minimal. The 'partygate' scandal has already seen public opinion turn against Johnson (latest polling from new UK pollster Techne has the Conservatives 8% behind Labour) with Major's speech unlikely to add any more fuel to the fire.
  • Major's speech is also unlikely to prove influential on Conservative MPs debating whether to submit a letter to 1922 Committee chair Sir Graham Brady seeking a leadership contest.
