France Favors LNG Imports Rather than Pipeline Expansions

The French Ministry is targeting LNG imports rather than further pipelines with other EU nations as a way of alleviating itself of the current gas crisis.

  • The French ministry said in a statement that new LNG terminals in Northern and Eastern Europe, particularly Germany, would be a quicker and cheaper option than a new pipeline.
  • On touted pipeline proposals, the ministry said "Such a project would take many years to become operational ... and would therefore not respond to the current crisis."
