French, UK FMs Travel To Israel 15 Aug To Prevent 'All-Out-War'

MIDEAST

The foreign ministers of France and the United Kingdom, Stéphane Séjourné and David Lammy, are due to travel to Israel on 15 August "in an attempt to prevent an all-out war in the Middle East" according to wires. The ministers will meet with their Israeli counterpart Israel Katz as well as PM Benjamin Netanyahu amid still-high tensions surrounding the prospect of an Iranian-led strike on Israel.

  • Sejourne has been in the Lebanese capital Beirut today holding talks with PM Najib Mikati and Foreign Minister Abdallah Bou Habib. The National reports, "Mr Sejourne reiterated France's stance on the need for a ceasefire in Gaza, saying it "will be necessary to guarantee peace in the region".He said he carried a "very simple" message of de-escalation addressed to Lebanese authorities "and which will also be addressed to other countries in the region".
  • With a significant US diplomatic presence already in the region, the visit of two high-ranking French and British ministers is likely to forestall any aggressive Iranian response in the very short term.
