Fresh Poll Confirms Likud Trails Benny Gantz's National Unity

ISRAEL

A fresh opinion poll published by Maariv newspaper confirmed recent trends, suggesting that should a general election be held today, the ruling coalition led by Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu's Likud party would fail to secure the 61 seats needed to command an absolute majority in the Knesset.

  • The poll put former Defence Minister Benny Gantz's National Unity on 27 seats, with Likud on 26. Former Prime Minister Yair Lapid's Yesh Atid, the largest opposition party in the current Knesset, would get 19 seats.
  • Survey results imply that the opposition bloc would secure 68 seats versus the 52 seats for the incumbent coalition, albeit any election would undoubtedly trigger negotiations between different parties.
  • The results fall in line with the outcomes of other recent opinion polls as Likud is struggling to recover from the reputational damage caused by its controversial judicial overhaul plan which triggered widespread protests.
