Further Support For PDI-P’s Ganjar Announced

INDONESIA

In further news regarding Indonesia’s presidential and legislative elections due in February next year:

  • The United Development Party (PPP) has supported the governing PDI-P’s presidential candidate Ganjar, even though its other coalition members Golkar and PAN are likely to nominate Golkar Chairman Airlangga. These two parties will still meet the 20% of seats requirement despite this move. PPP’s decision is not a surprise as Ganjar’s wife is the daughter of a former PPP executive. (Jakarta Globe)
  • In the latest SMRC poll taken between 11 and 14 April before PDI-P’s nomination, PDI-P candidate Ganjar had the highest support on 24.3% followed closely by Gerindra’s Prabowo on 22.5%. The other nominee Anies from Nasdem was on 15%. While it is early days, these results imply that there will be two rounds as not one candidate will achieve 50% in the first round. The poll for the legislative election showed that PDI-P continues to have the largest support but that it has dropped substantially to 16.1% from 23.4% in the March survey. Gerindra is second on 11.7% down from 14.1%.
