The G7 are shortly due to issue a statement following an emergency leaders' meeting called to coordinate a response to Russian missile strikes on civilian infrastructure.

  • Comments from a draft of the statement per Bloomberg: "G7 leaders to say will continue to provide financial, humanitarian, military, diplomatic, and legal support to Ukraine."
  • "G7 leaders to say any attacks on Western infrastructure will be met by united and determined response."
  • This weeks' missile attacks are likely to expediate the delivery of sophisticated missile defence systems which Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky has been requesting for weeks.
  • Washington has hitherto resisted the inclusion of such systems in military aid packages due to concerns surrounding the training of Ukrainian troops and fears it may escalate the conflict.
  • On the supply of missile defence systems, the Kremlin said this morning, “this will make the conflict longer and more painful for the Ukrainian side but won’t change our goals.”
