Gov't Approval Ratings Strong As PM Raises Prospect Of Def. Spending Hike

JAPAN

Approval ratings for Japanese PM Fumio Kishida and his Cabinet remain strong as the gov't raises the prospect of Japan significantly boosting its military spending to deal with an increasingly polarised geopolitical landscape globally and in Asia.

  • Approval ratings are often used as a proxy in Japanese politics for the ability of a gov't to enact its policy agenda. Kishida's strong approval, combined with rising public support for greater military spending could make plans to raise Japan's defence spending to 2% of GDP (equivalent to NATO targets) from 1.24% at present an easier prospect over the long term.
