Gov't Confirms Arms Shipments To Ukraine

FINLAND

The Finnish gov't has confirmed that it is sending lethal weaponry to Ukraine, breaking the country's long-standing neutrality when it comes to international relations, particularly with regards to Russia.

  • Finland to ship 2,500 assault rifles, 150,000 bullets, 1,500 anti-tank weapons to Ukraine according to the statement.
  • Finland is not a NATO member state, but there has been increased speculation that Finland and neighbouring Sweden could seek to join the alliance in response to Russia's invasion of Ukraine. In response, Moscow has issued thinly-veiled comments regarding both Nordic nations and their security situation if they were to join NATO.
  • Finland not the only country to alter long-standing policies with regards to Russia. Earlier today, Switzerland announced the implementation of sanctions on Russia along the lines of those imposed by the EU. Meanwhile, Germany is set to provide weaponry to Ukraine, and Chancellor Olaf Scholz announced that Germany would boost defence spending to the 2% of GDP level set by NATO.
