Haley To Stay In Presidential Race Despite Narrow Odds

US

Former South Carolina Governor Nikki Haley appears committed to staying in the race for the Republican presidential nomination until Super Tuesday (March 5), despite the overwhelming odds against her.

  • Haley told NBC yesterday: “I have every intention of going to Super Tuesday — through Super Tuesday. We’re going to keep on going, and see where this gets us. That’s what we know we’re going to do right now. I take it one state at a time. I don’t think too far ahead.”
  • Haley sidestepped a question asking if she needs to win the next race in her home state of South Carolina: “I think I need to do better than I did in New Hampshire. So this is a building situation… It’s not about which state you get and which you don’t.”
  • Bookmakers see effectively no pathway for Haley. According to data from Smarkets, former President Donald Trump is given a 94% implied probability of winning the nomination.
  • Axios reports that Haley has a major nationwide fundraising drive planned ahead of South Carolina: “Haley has more than 10 fundraisers scheduled in the next two weeks — including in California, Florida, New York, and Texas … Tomorrow night she'll be in New York City for an event whose hosts include Ken Langone, the Home Depot co-founder who previously said he was waiting for Haley's New Hampshire results because he ‘did not want to throw money down a rat hole.’”
