Helsinki Commission Hearing On European Energy Security Today

14:30 ET 19:30 BST: The Commission on Security and Cooperation in Europe (Helsinki Commission) will hold a hearing today on the future of energy security in Europe.

  • According to the commission: Russian energy sanctions in Europe have 'lagged,' the EU is continuing to send USD€1bn a day to Russia via energy purchases, and several EU states are failing to reduce their dependency on Russian oil.
  • The hearing "will examine plans to create a Europe that is wholly free from Russian oil and gas. Witnesses will discuss the importance of a robust energy embargo to starving the Russian war machine; options to ensure that Ukraine’s energy needs are met; alternative sources of energy for Europe; and the perspective of Germany, which plays an outsize role as the most powerful economy in Europe and a primary consumer of Russian natural resources."
