House Vote On TikTok Bill Underway Shortly

US

The US House of Representatives is shortly due to vote on a legislation that would force the Chinese company ByteDance to sell the social media platform TikTok or face a de facto ban in the US. Livestream

  • As with all recent legislation in the House, the vote will be held under suspension of rules and require a two-thirds bipartisan majority to pass. It is expected to clear the House comfortably but faces a more uncertain outlook in the Senate, despite backing from the White House who helped craft the legislation during months of secret bipartisan negotiations.
  • Hardline conservative Reps Marjorie Taylor Greene (R-GA), and Chip Roy (R-TX) took opposing positions in debate ahead of the vote suggesting that a sceptical position from former President Donald Trump has done little to dissuade his allied lawmakers from supporting the bill.
  • Punchbowl News reports: “We’ll say this — almost no legislation moves through the House this quickly. It’s extraordinarily unusual, especially for a bill that could both directly impact millions of Americans while also spilling over into U.S.-China relations.”
  • TikTok executive Michael Beckerman said in a letter to lawmakers this week that the bill raised “serious constitutional concerns” and was “being rushed through at unprecedented speed without even the benefit of a public hearing.”
