Hungary Entering ‘Final Phase’ of EU Fund Talks Thursday

  • Speaking at a conference in Budapest this morning, Tibor Navracsics, the country’s minister for EU funds, said Hungary will hold the “final, closing phase” of talks on unlocking EU financing on Thursday. Local news site Index reported earlier that Navracsics and EU Affairs Minister Janos Boka will meet with EU Budget Commissioner Johannes Hahn and Justice Commissioner Didier Reynders in Brussels on Thursday. Their sources claim that the meeting is likely to be crucial to concluding negotiations.
  • Hungary-China relations under the presidency of Xi Jinping are at an all-time high, Prime Minister Orban is cited as saying by MTI, adding that "China can count on Hungary remaining a part of the initiative, irrespective of political debates in Europe, and pursuing cooperation with Beijing".
  • Orban will continue his visit to China today, where he’s attending the Belt and Road Initiative forum. There are no major economic releases on the docket.
