Incoming For. Min-EU/Mercosur Talks To Resume; Lula To Visit US & China

RTRS carrying comments from incoming Brazilian Foreign Minister Mauro Vieira. States that President-Elect Luiz Inacio Lula da Silvs will visit both the US and China within three months of taking office on 1 January 2023. Also commits to attenting Community of Latin American and Caribbean States (CELAC) summit in Argentina.

  • Vieira states that long-running talks on an EU-Mercosur trade deal will be resumed. Talks have run for decades, and an agreement in principle was reached in 2019, but there has not been notable progress since then.
  • Says gov't will 'take a closer look' at the accession process for the OECD (Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development) with Vieira saying that he sees some 'positive things'.
  • Vieira states that Lula told him to 'restore relations with Venezuela'. Links with Venezuela have been non-existent for the past four years under the Bolsonaro presidency.
  • States that Brazil will take 'all measures' necessary to host the COP30 climate change summit in one of Brazil's Amazon states. Lula stated his ambition to hold the summit in his address to the COP27 summit in Egypt.
