-INDIA: Trudeau-Canada Not Looking To Escalate Situation w/India

Wires carrying comments from Canadian PM Justin Trudeau, says that "Canada is not looking to escalate the situation with India, we will continue to engage responsibly and constructively with New Delhi." Adds that "We want to be on the ground in India to help Canadian families there." Trudeau's comments come after headlines reporting the Indian gov't demanding that 41 of the 62 Canadian diplomats based in India leave the country.

  • New Delhi and Ottawa remain locked in a spat that has damaged bilateral relations and likely extinguished the prospect of any free trade agreement between the two any time soon. It relates to the killing of a Sikh separatist leader Hardeep Singh Nijjar in Canada in June, after which Trudeau raised the prospect that Indian agents were involved in his killing (Nijjar was labelled a terrorist by New Delhi three years ago).
