Israeli Officials Believe JCPOA Deal Close

SECURITY

Haaretz has reported that Israeli officials believe Iran and global leaders are 'very likely' to sign an agreement on Iran's nuclear program soon. This follows reports this week from the French, Chinese, and Russian camps stating that a deal is close.

  • Israeli sources say the agreement will be a version of the 2015 deal with minor changes as reported by Reuters yesterday. Iran denies the reported draft agreement and Israel is expected to oppose a deal.
  • US House Speaker Nancy Pelosi (D-CA) was in Israel this week attempting to gather Israeli support for a deal but Israel still believes that the Iranian nuclear is too far progressed to achieve stability.
  • On the US domestic front, the situation is ever more complicated. More than 160 House Republicans are threatening to torpedo a deal. The GOP has said that any agreement struck without congressional approval would be overturned if Republicans retake the White House. With a deal looking so close the US domestic response may derail the diplomatic process.
