Jan 6 Committee Final Meeting Today, Criminal Referral For Trump Likely

US

The January 6 Committee will hold its ultimate public meeting today at 13:00 ET 18:00 GMT to vote on its final report and deliberate on criminal referrals against former President Donald Trump and his associates.

  • Politico: The committee will likely urge the DoJ to charge Trump with, “at least three crimes: inciting an insurrection, obstructing an official proceeding and conspiring to defraud the United States.”
  • The executive summary of the committee’s final report is expected to released today, with the full report to follow later this week.
  • Congress has never made a criminal referral against a current or former president and any referral made by the committee, although not legally binding, would represent a significant moment in US political history.
  • Rep. Adam Schiff (D-CA) said yesterday: “Viewing it as a former prosecutor, I think there’s sufficient evidence to charge the president.”
  • The committee may also decide to refer Republican lawmakers, including House Minority Leader Kevin McCarthy (R-CA), to the House Ethics Committee for refusing to comply with subpoenas to testify before the panel.
  • Axios reports the GOP will release their own 100+ page rebuttal to the Jan. 6 committee report this week.
