Japan Ruling Camp On Track For Upper House Majority (Nikkei Poll)

JAPAN

The latest Nikkei poll suggests that “Prime Minister Fumio Kishida's ruling Liberal Democratic Party is projected to win about 60 seats on its own, out of the 125 up for grabs, beating its previous upper house tally and matching a performance achieved only twice in the past.”

  • “Prime Minister Fumio Kishida, the leader of the LDP, has said that the bar for victory is the ruling coalition -- including smaller partner Komeito -- holding half of all seats, including those not up for reelection. The poll shows this target is likely to be met.”
  • The Nikkei poll also suggests that “parties and independent candidates in favor of constitutional reform -- including the LDP, Komeito, Nippon Ishin (the Japan Innovation Party) and the Democratic Party for the People -- could win more than 82 seats. These four parties already hold 84 seats in the uncontested half of the house, meaning the two-thirds majority of at least 166 seats is within their grasp.”
