JCPOA Negotiations Approach Conclusion But Iran-US Standoff Continues

SECURITY

Reuters has reported that a European official working on the Iranian Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action nuclear accords claims the negotiations have concluded and a successful outcome will depends on the political will of Washington and Tehran.

  • According to the official, a deal now must be agreed between Iran and the United States. White House spox John Kirby said yesterday that a deal is ready to do. The strong implication of recent White House comments is that the US is not prepared to deviate or make any additional concessions to Iran outside of the completed deal.
  • EU official: "We are very, very advanced in the negotiations. We have had a round of so-called proximity talks in Doha; they produced no results and the reason is very clear because we have negotiated everything that was on the table."
  • The official continues: "We can be more precise on some details that are still pending, we are waiting for some ideas from Tehran and what the Americans have to say... I don't know (if it is) the end of the process, but the end of the negotiations, yes."
  • Henry Rome of the Eurasia Group tweets: "Re Iran Talks outlook, Biden’s comments in Israel don’t move the needle much: —JCPOA is preferred and Iranian bomb will be prevented, but no clarity on approach between those two poles —Not waiting forever on JCPOA, but no deadline/real urgency, Plan B, or alternative dip paths."
