JCPOA Negotiators Depart Vienna To Consider Deal

Sources close to the JCPOA Iran nuclear deal talks in Vienna have reported that there will be a staggered return to the JCPOA.

  • According to the report, the Biden administration will first submit agreed terms to Congress for approval on relief on oil sanctions.
  • Earlier today French diplomat Philippe Errera tweeted: 'We are close. E3 negotiators leaving Vienna briefly to update Ministers on state of play. Ready to return soon. #ViennaTalks #EndgameViennaTalks'.
  • Rafael Grossi director of the Atomic Energy Agency is in Iran today to monitor the nuclear programme. He wrote: 'I'm traveling to Tehran today for meetings with Iranian officials tomorrow to address outstanding questions in Iran. This is a critical time but a positive outcome for everyone is possible.'
  • A deal has looked close for a number of weeks but developments today suggest that a deal may be considered over the weekend for ratification next week.
  • US lawmakers will be concerned over the optics of a Russian brokered JCPOA deal but the escalating price of oil will be a key consideration for the White House and Congress.
