Kishida Considers Replacing Economic Revitalisation Minister Yamagiwa

Japan's Prime Minister Fumio Kishida is considering replacing Economic Revitalisation Minister Daishiro Yamagiwa over his ties with the Unification Church, FNN reports.

  • Yamagiwa was targeted by opposition lawmakers during recent hearings in the Budget Committee, who pressured him to provide full and accurate information on his relationship with the controversial religious movement.
  • The Minister only admitted his connections with the Unification Church after they were confirmed by photographic evidence and independent reports. Opinion polls taken in the recent weeks showed that majority of people wanted him to step down.
  • FNN reports that Kishida initially feared that sacking the Economic Revitalisation minister could trigger a "domino of resignations," but has now come to the conclusion that replacing Yamagiwa would be the best option.
