Kremlin-Biden's Kyiv Visit 'Nothing Extraordinary'; Belarus Raises Alarm

Kremlin spox Dmitri Peskov has stated that US President Joe Biden's trip to Poland was 'nothing extraordinary' nd that Russia 'carefully watched' his visit. Adds that Russia 'will also monitor closely events in Poland'. Comes as Russian President Vladimir Putin is set to deliver his annual address to the Federal Assembly around the top of the hour. Peskov states that "It can be assumed that most of it will be devoted to assessing the causes and inevitability of the special operation"

  • The Belarusian Defence Ministry has issued a number of comments seemingly raising the prospect of its troops engaging in some form of action against Ukraine. Russian state-run Tass reports that Belarus sees 'direct threats to its military security'. that a 'significant grouping of Ukrainian army has massed near its border', and that Belarus will take 'adequate measures' to respond to military provocations. Adds that Belarus plans to hold more than 150 joint exercises with Russia in 2023.
  • Belarus was a key staging post for the initial launch of Russia's invasion of Ukraine, so any increased activity on the border with Ukraine will be viewed with keen interest in Kyiv and by the West.
