Kremlin-Relations w/US In A 'Lamentable State' & At Lowest Level

RUSSIA

Kremlin spox Dmitri Peskov has stated that relations with the United States are in a 'lamentable state' and at their lowest level. This comes in the wake of the US military stating on 14 March that the actions of a Russian fighter jet resulted in the downing of an unmanned US drone in the Black Sea.

  • Peskov: We have nothing to add to the [Russian] defence ministry statement.
  • Peskov: There have been no highest-level contacts with the US over the drone incident.
  • Peskov: Russia does not and will never refuse constructive dialogue.
The incident over the Black Sea, which saw a Russian Su-27 jet clip the US drone's propeller in what the US called 'reckless' and 'unsafe' behaviour. Russian Ambassador to the US Anatoly Antonov stated that the jet's actions were justified in that the drone was allegedly “moving deliberately and provocatively towards the Russian territory with its transponders turned off. [The drone] violated the boundaries of the temporary airspace regime established for the special military operation,”
  • The incident raises the spectre that has been the case since NATO began to provide significant military equipment to Ukraine, that a conflagration between Russia and NATO comes not from direct attack but as a result of miscalculation from an individual or individuals at a low level on the chain of command on one side.
