Japan's ruling Liberal Democratic Party will allow Goshi Hosono to formally join its ranks, the Yomiuri Shimbun reports. Hosono ran as an independent candidate and defeated the LDP's Takeru Yoshikawa in the single-seat district Shizuoka-5.

  • Yoshikawa is a member of the Kishida faction within the ruling party and won a seat through the proportional representation system, despite losing in his single-seat constituency.
  • Hosono has previously served as Nuclear Power Minister and Environment Minister in cabinets formed by the Democratic Party of Japan. In 2019, he joined the Nikai faction of the LDP as a "special member" from outside of the party.
