Leaders Meet On Energy Prices, But No Decision Until 20 Oct EUCO-WaPo

Beatriz Rios at WaPo with comments on EU leaders' efforts to reach agreement on how to control energy prices:

  • "After yesterday's first meeting of the European Political Community, E.U. leaders are meeting again today in Prague with an agenda mainly focused on energy [...] how to find a way to lower the price of gas while guaranteeing the security of supply.[...]."
  • "If we can get the price of gas down in Europe, we can help our economy but also maintain the support among our citizens for the war effort against Russia and continuing to support Ukraine", said Latvian PM Krisjanis Karins. "Energy has become the most strategic issue", E.U. chief diplomat Josep Borrell admitted. Don't expect much action though, this is just an informal setting. Leaders are meeting again in two weeks to take actual decisions."
The next European Council summit takes place in Brussels on 20-21 October.
